What is BDD?

Body Dysmorphia Disorder is a mental disorder that causes the person suffering, to feel insecure about a part of their body that they deem to be imperfect and is halting them from living their lives in the most fulfilling ways possible. Granted we all feel somewhat insecure in our lives, but those that suffer from body dysmorphia will let it take control of their every decision and it will often render them comatose should their mental state be that bad. It is of note that anyone can be affected by this, so age, gender and background are all moot when it comes to BDD.

These issues can be categorised as something as simple as not having a symmetrical face, or having a freckle or blemish on their skin. These issues differ on a case by case basis in terms of what they deem to be impure, and the levels of severity they treat them with. BDD can lead one to act irrationally, and without thought, it is the reason behind mood swings and many other ailments that should not play a factor in the everyday life of a normal functioning human being.

When does having BDD become a mental health issue?

BDD is always a mental health issue, this is an important thing to state as most consider it nothing but a point of comparison to a well known celebrity. Some will spend hours in the mirror wishing they looked differently, when they should learn to love themselves for who they are and what they look like. If it gets to a point of severe worry on the mental state of yourself or someone else with BDD then professional help should be sought after.
