What is a Catatonic Limb?
Catatonic Limbs are defined as the decrease or increase in flexibility in ones own limbs. The ailment is often compared to the symptoms found in schizophrenic patients. Catatonic disorders plague a lot of people, and are characterised by irregular patterns within your own motor functions. There are various different ways that one can suffer from catatonic related ailments. Each case differs in severity depending on the location and overall impact that it is having on the mental state of the individual. Some might find that this affects the joints in certain body parts that they use on a daily basis.
You might find that you elbow locks itself in position, thus making it difficult to go about your everyday life without having use of your elbow fully. The triggers for catatonic limbs depend on the person, it is a mixture of environmental factors as well as genetics. There are some cases where these catatonic ailments are only temporary, although for those that have this issue for months on end, they have a less than stellar experience.
When does having Catatonic Limbs become a mental issue?
Those suffering from catatonic states will often be met with bouts of depression and anxiety. This is due to various reasons the most obvious being how we are seen within society. Having some sort of physical ailment is always going to derive attention, and not always for the wrong reasons. It can be difficult to meet these fears head on, although it is possible. Depression will often keep someone in the same position with no motivation to move, which is seen as somewhat ideal if their limbs are often locking in the same position. There are some very rare cases that people have chosen to develop extreme mutism: an byproduct of catatonic limbs that causes them to no longer communicate vocally. This is often tied to the bouts of depression that we’ve mentioned previously. There are some people out there that will choose to suffer in silence with these issues. This will only develop mood disorders.
