Low self esteem rests on the confidence of the individual. Confidence is the belief in one’s self and their overall demeanour. Being confident is seen as one of the most attractive traits one can have. This is why it is one of the most desirable traits to own; confidence often means power, which in turn can make you more socially accepted within certain friendship circles. Striking a healthy balance can be difficult, especially if you are someone that has lived their entire lives as an introvert.
Although having too much confidence can be considered a bad thing as it causes one to not rationalise their behaviour, often acting cocky which can alienate yourself despite having a certain level of confidence to begin with. Having too little low self esteem on the other hand, and you risk missing out on quite a lot experiences; trapped within your own shell.
When does having low self esteem become a mental health issue?
Having low self esteem can cause one to feel alienated from there respected friendship groups. This can put a lot of expectations onto the shoulders of these individuals. Living up to a certain standard of living can be difficult, especially when it requires a certain mentality/bravado that can only be achieved through possessing confidence. Confidence can only be earned through ones own mind, which can be difficult if you are someone that has lived their entire lives a certain way up until this point.
Anxiety can manifest itself in someone who is struggling with low self esteem. These pressures can cause one to feel restless, often choosing to not go outside and socialise due to not feeling like they are worthy of interaction. This is not healthy and should be considered an issue if it is beginning to take its toll on the psyche of the individual. A confident life is a happy life, but only when you understand how it will benefit you in the long run.
