Nightmares are nothing to joke about if you’ve ever been in the situation of experiencing one of these terrors for yourself. Although it is to be believed that nightmares only affect children, adults have been known to also suffer greatly. Nightmares can be extremely distressing for anyone caught in the middle of one. Nightmares can appear so real to the individual that they could even live their lives terrified of falling asleep. We are all different, which makes every case and episode of night terrors different in how they play out.

The mind is a cruel and dim place in these episodes as they will often use your greatest fears against you. Some may envision spiders crawling all over them, and others might see a figure just standing in their room, helpless in their attempt to look away or wake up fully. Being locked in this position is frightening, and with good reason. Those who have experienced nightmares have stated that it is the most petrifying experience they’ve ever come to known in their life.

When do nightmares become a mental health issue?

Nightmares are manifestations of your subconscious displayed in real time while you are in a state of paralysis. What you see happening in-front of you can feel so real because of how powerful the mind is at describing detail.  Nightmares can leave a very lasting impression, even keeping people from living their lives normally outside of their own dreams. There are various symptoms to nightmares, these symptoms are even more poignant in those that suffer from frequent nightmares. Although you might believe otherwise, nightmares are a cause for serious concern due to the lasting affect they hold onto people. Paranoia is just one of the many different ailments that can spawn from nightmares.
