What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a cocktail of chemicals produced by your brain that give rise to you feeling worried, tense or afraid. It is predominantly about things that are about to happen, or which you think could happen in the future.
Anxiety is a natural human response when you perceive that you are under threat. It can be experienced through your thoughts, which causes feelings and physical sensations. These thoughts are usually driven at a below conscious level, which triggers the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism in your brain.
When does anxiety become a mental health issue?
If you feel that you are limited in certain areas of your life then you could say that your anxiety has become a mental health problem. Presenting issues could be:
- You blow the smallest things out of proportion
- Your anxiety lasts for long periods of time
- You can’t seem to get a handle on your problem, feeling out of control
- Your heart feels like it’s going to explode because it’s pumping so fast
- You are living in fear of a panic attack, which can actually cause an attack
- You find life is a constant battle because of these self-limiting beliefs
The natural benefits of anxiety
You may have tried various drugs, breathing techniques, yoga or even mindfulness but ultimately they only work short term, if at all. This is because the adrenaline that your brain continually produces to consciously alert you to your situation is also accelerating your heart rate and encouraging you to run away.
We share the process of anxiety with the animal kingdom and it’s there to get us out of trouble on a very primitive level. If our system perceives a threat it produces cortisol and adrenaline to give us the energy to fight – (quite literally lash out physically), Flight – run away, Freeze – Stand frozen solid to the spot. These survival settings were brilliant when we lived in caves but nowadays, they are outmoded and we can no longer give in to these basic instincts.
Anxiety is a sign that you have a very good imagination, sadly it is working against you, leaving you wired but tired, stressed and often just plain worn out with the fear of tomorrow looking over you.
Did you know that you can’t be anxious about the past unless you believe something back there is going to turn up in your future? This is because anxiety is caused by the threat response inside your brain is switched on and it won’t stop because your brain is perceiving danger ahead of you, so the alarm bell rings.
